When Don and Katy Kilwin started Kilwins in 1947, they worked hard to bring their guests everything from baked goods to chocolates, fudge, and ice cream. Fast forward to today, and we continue to preserve our family recipes in our Mackinaw City chocolate store. We offer more than chocolate and ice cream. For starters, Kilwins is the only place where you can find the Perfect Caramel Apple. Our batch of caramel apples is made with the purest Granny Smith apples and hand-dipped in our store with our signature caramel. The result is a flawless apple coated with creamy and rich caramel and dressed in the finest toppings, from milk chocolate to peanuts and pecans.
Of course, where would Kilwins be without our signature Mackinac Island Fudge? It all started when founder Don Kilwin bought a marble table in 1947 and started mastering the art of fudge making. Since then, more flavors of this delicious fudge have graced our stores all over the country, such as chocolate, sea salt, and peanut butter.
Mackinaw City is a particularly meaningful place for Kilwins. Mackinaw City is the door to Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the historic Mackinac Island. Mackinac Island started producing its namesake fudge in the 19th century, and we still use the same method at Kilwins. We make fudge using Mackinac Island's original method—pouring hot, kettle-made fudge on cool marble, pushing and pulling the fudge until it's ready to cut into delicious slices.
