Kilwins was founded in 1947 when our founders, Don and Katy Kilwin, created the perfect chocolate recipe. Eager to share their candy with their community, they opened up the first Kilwins in Petoskey, MI. Now, we have homes in many states, including our Chicago River North chocolate store.
Since we began, our goal has been simple: to craft the highest quality confections for our treasured guests. There’s a certain, undeniable joy that comes with each bite of chocolate, and our mission is to share that happiness with everyone who sits at our table.
Our Heritage chocolate is still made with the same recipe our founders wrote almost 80 years ago, and our Original Recipe Ice Cream recipe hasn’t changed since 1985. Many products are even made using our original equipment. For instance, our hand-dropped caramels are made in copper kettles that predate World War II.
Our Chicago River North ice cream store is perfectly situated Downtown and within walking distance of all sorts of interesting things to do. Our Chicago River North chocolate store may be rooted in our Heritage chocolate, but our Original Recipe Ice Cream is a resounding favorite. Our Original Recipe Ice Cream was born in 1985 when we decided to try selling ice cream at one of our locations. The ice cream was such a hit that we knew it needed a permanent place in every store.
Our base recipe hasn’t changed one bit since it was first created almost 40 years ago. Each flavor is made with cream sourced from local family farms and premium ingredients. Many of the ingredients are even made right here at Kilwins, such as chocolate and caramel. Additionally, all of our flavors are Kosher-certified.
Once the ice cream is made, we ship it to our Chicago River North ice cream store in our very own temperature-controlled transport vans. The ice cream itself is packed in containers that we designed specifically to preserve the crisp flavors and smooth texture.
This ice cream is available in a variety of irresistible flavors, from classic chocolate and vanilla to any of our rotating special-edition flavors. Our Mackinac Island Fudge was also one of our very first candies, and we still make it the same way as we did nearly 80 years ago. Our fudge is hand-paddled on marble tables and shaped by hand.
