We’ve been making and selling fudge for almost as long as we’ve been making and selling chocolates. Don and Katy Kilwin bought a marble table in 1948 and soon after, started hand-crafting fudge right there. They started simple with just a few flavors at the outset, but over the years, Kilwins has added new flavors to cater to as many people as we could.
Growing our flavor roster of products isn’t the only thing we’ve been working on: We’ve also been working on growing our number of locations so more people across the country can taste what we think are some of the best treats you can find anywhere. As we continue to spread Kilwins across America, we work just as hard to make sure that each and every store is held to the same standards of quality as our first.
When you walk into our Annapolis, Main Street, location, we want you to feel like it’s just as special as walking into Don and Katy’s home, filled with the smell of delicious chocolate and a warm atmosphere you can melt in.
Part of the secret to our success is the direct line of knowledge passed down from one generation of head candy cooks to the next. This knowledge isn’t the only thing we’ve passed down — some of our cooking equipment is the same that we first used in the 1940s. You really can taste the difference.
We’ve added to our equipment with some more modern technology to help make new flavors and improve parts of our process, but we just wouldn’t be Kilwins without our classic techniques and flavors.
In 1985, Kilwins officially added ice cream to our store offerings. We take making ice cream seriously. Kilwins gets all of our high-quality ingredients from local and family farms so that we have consistent and reliable access to the freshest and richest supplies. We use these ingredients to make the premium base for our Kosher-certified ice cream and combine it with fresh-chopped nuts, and homemade fudge.
Just like with our chocolates and fudge, we aren’t satisfied with just making a few flavors of each. Over the decades, we’ve slowly added new flavors to our ice cream parlor, branching out from traditional classics to give you more options to try each time you visit our Kilwins location in Annapolis, MD. We even have a variety of limited-edition flavors at different times of the year.

We expertly freeze our ice cream in customized tubs to ensure that it maintains its quality throughout the shipping process, and we transport it across the country in our very own temperature-controlled trucks.

While we’ve made some adjustments to how we make chocolate and ice cream at an ever-increasing scale, the core process itself has remained true to how we started. Much of this original equipment you see today was used to make the very first batch of chocolates in 1947.
This isn’t to say that we aren’t constantly advancing and improving how and what we make — we’re constantly testing out and bringing in new machines to adjust and adapt with the times, but every new piece we add is done to complement the beautiful process we’ve spent decades building and perfecting.
