Kilwins was founded in 1947 by husband and wife Don and Katy Kilwin, who had a passion for sweets that we feel in everything we do. They started with humble beginnings, selling baked goods before expanding into the Kilwins we know today. We’re excited to bring our hand-crafted desserts from our first home in Petoskey, Michigan, to St. Joseph and beyond.

Our products come straight from the genius minds of Don and Katy Kilwin. For decades, these recipes have remained unchanged, which only speaks to our commitment to upholding the Kilwins family tradition. Much of candy-making equipment is still going strong to this day, dating back to the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. We have plenty of modern equipment, but we’re proud of our Heritage equipment—made when quality mattered most.
Here at Kilwins, we oversee all stages of the candy-making process from our very own kitchen to ensure no room for error. We invested in special storage facilities and transport vehicles that allow us to control the temperature of our ice cream in transport. Kilwins values quality over quantity, so we stay committed to making every piece of chocolate by hand to maintain the integrity and richness of each product.
Kilwins offers a wide range of unique products, and we don’t put anything out there that isn’t perfect. Speaking of perfect, we created the perfect caramel apple. That’s right! One of Kilwins trademark products is the Perfect Caramel Apple. Made with freshly picked Granny Smith apples and coated with smooth, creamy caramel, our caramel apples are a crowd favorite.
Whether you like apples dipped in caramel or if you want to add a little extra, like milk chocolate, candy, or more, Kilwins allows you to do just that; all you have to do is say the word.
Here at Kilwins, we also make our special Heritage chocolate, which is no ordinary chocolate. Our Heritage chocolates provide a very unique flavor profile that you can only get at Kilwins. It comes in milk, white, and dark chocolate, with hints of caramel, vanilla, or spice, respectively. You can get this chocolate by the bar, in bark, or in a bag, which comes with multiple bars for you to share with friends and family.
To buy Mackinac Island Fudge without traveling to Mackinac Island in Lake Huron, look no further than Kilwins. Our fudge recipe is the same one created by founder Don Kilwin when he bought a marble table back in 1947. We still use marble tables and copper kettles to make Mackinac Island Fudge, pushing and pulling it by hand.
Of course, you cannot have quality desserts without ice cream. One of Kilwins’ signature items is their Original Recipe Ice Cream. Take your pick among over a dozen flavors; each scoop is as good as the last since they’re made with premium dairy products.
Since 1985, we’ve been proud to bring Original Recipe Ice Cream to Kilwins fans. Since then, we’ve been able to create over a dozen flavors, all of which are made with the highest quality and consistency. Every spoonful, scoop, and cone is better than the last.
Just like our chocolates and fudge, we insist on the best production and maintenance possible for our ice cream. We source our dairy from trusted local family farms to ensure the freshest milk and cream.
Our ice cream is then transported to the Kilwins St. Joseph ice cream store in Kilwins’ very own temperature-controlled trucks and stored in specialized containers that help maintain consistency and quality. Not to mention, like many of our products, our ice cream is Kosher-certified.
