Our founders, Don and Katy Kilwin, shared a love for chocolate and candy-making. This passion led them to open the very first Kilwins store back in 1947.
They had one goal in mind: to create and sell the best products possible. The Kilwins started with small batches of baked goods and homemade chocolate before growing their menu to include our famous Mackinac Island Fudge, TUTTLE™ Nut Caramels, and nut brittles.
Our Chicago Hyde Park chocolate store is a place where anyone can have a good time and enjoy themselves. We believe that candy-making is an art form, one that takes a lot of time and effort. That’s why we still make many of our treats by hand, and we never settle for anything less than perfect.
Many of the treats you’ll find in our Hyde Park ice cream store are still made using the original recipes created by our founders all those decades ago. It’s our way of giving back to the founders who built this company from the ground up. We also still use some of the same equipment, with some machines dating back to the 40s, 50s, and 60s.
We insist on handcrafting our Mackinac Island Fudge using traditional hand-paddling techniques and cool marble slabs. This is because, to us, quality will always matter over quantity. We enjoy being able to take our time and pay attention to the smallest details, ensuring consistently perfect desserts.

The secret to our delicious flavors is our ingredients, which are held to the same high standards that have made our chocolates a household name. Our fresh milk and cream are sourced from family-owned farms, and each flavor is Kosher-certified.
We also operate our very own climate-controlled trucks for shipping and handling. Our trucks monitor our ice cream’s temperature to prevent the dessert from melting or freezing too much. Our ice cream tubs themselves are also specialized to maintain our ice cream’s consistency. This ensures our ice cream remains fresh until it reaches our Chicago Hyde Park chocolate store.
