Kilwins first started in 1947 when our founders, Don and Katy Kilwin, opened up our flagship store in Petoskey, MI. Our founders pursued candy making as a passion project, and once they perfected their recipes, their goal was to share their sweets with their community.
Eighty years later, Kilwins has grown quite a bit. Even as we grow, our mission remains the same. At our Athens chocolate store, we measure success in memories made, smiles shared, and sweets enjoyed.
It’s not just our mission that’s stayed the same all these years — many of our recipes are still the original ones crafted by our founders. Our Heritage chocolate is the same as it was 80 years ago, and our caramels are still dropped by hand into our authentic copper kettles.
In today’s world of efficiency and uniformity, we stand apart as the guardians of traditional chocolatiering. There’s a good reason for that: We’ve found that the careful touch of a skilled confectioner is the best way to make truly high-quality sweets. Even our creamy Mackinac Island Fudge is still paddled by hand on marble countertops.

Our chocolate is known all over the United States, and we’re excited to say our ice cream has also achieved that legendary status. Some say our Original Recipe Ice Cream is truly the crown jewel in our confectionery lineup. Today, our ice cream is another Kilwins tradition that’s been enjoyed for generations and will continue to be, for generations to come.
We first developed our Original Recipe Ice Cream in 1985 as an experiment. When we realized how much our community loved it, we knew we had to give it a permanent spot in every store. We have an extensive menu of flavors, including standard classics and limited-edition creations. Each flavor is made with fresh cream sourced from local, family-owned farms and is 100 percent Kosher-certified.
However, the real key to our delicious flavor and creamy texture is our transportation practices. Often, ice cream can develop a hard or uneven texture due to unstable temperatures during transportation.
To combat this, we use temperature-controlled vans staffed with our own employees, who are trained to make sure the temperature stays steady throughout the drive. Our ice cream itself is packed in custom-made ice cream tubs designed to preserve its flavor and texture.
In our Athens ice cream store, you’ll find dozens of ice cream flavors and equally impressive premium toppings. Mix and match flavors until you find a combination that satisfies your sweet tooth, then finish your creation with one of our freshly made waffle cones.
There are plenty of ice cream shops around town, but none of them sell our Original Recipe Ice Cream. Our ice cream recipe has not changed for 40 years, and every flavor is made with cream sourced from family farms.
We have a variety of classic flavors, all of which are Kosher-certified. We also feature a rotating lineup of limited-edition flavors, so there’s always something new to try at our Athens chocolate store.
We’re known around the nation for our rich, creamy Heritage chocolate. You can try our original recipe chocolate in truffles, caramels, and creams. Of course, these all come in milk, dark, and white chocolate varieties.
We also use our 1947 chocolate to make our dipped-in-house, chocolate-covered treats. These include chocolate-dipped cookies, pretzels, fruits, nut clusters, marshmallows, and more.
